INABA OTOWA / Takahashi Rei is the otoko yaku top star of Yurigumi, a very skilled singer best known for her smooth contralto. She is 32 years old and became a top star recently, after having been star tracked for the better part of her Revue career. She lives and works with her onna yaku top star partner, SHIRATORI CHISATO.

Rei is from a very wealthy family in Tokyo. As the only girl, having two older brothers, she is expected to marry well once her Revue career is over. However, as she has discovered she is a lesbian, she is dreading the moment when she has to retire and now that she has been appointed top, she knows the end is nearing.
From she was 25 until the year she turned 30, she had a romantic relationship with fellow otoko yaku actress, AINO SARA /Maeda Sato Sayuri, from Baragumi, but when Sara is forced by her father to retire and marry, Rei gives up on the notion of love completely. She and Sara still meet, but their relationship is over and neither tries to rekindle the flame, accepting their circumstances bitterly.
Meanwhile, she nurtures a close friendship with Baragumi onnayaku, MACHI KAZUKO / Suzuki Emi, whom she met through Sara, since Sara and Machi are exes. They keep each other in the loop about their various troupe's shows and about Sara's life which is a frequent topic of discussion. Slowly, as the months pass and her retirement looms on the horizon, she has to decide what to do after her career in the Revue is over. After she meets ITO AKANE, a jazz musician whom Chisato used to date, she realizes what path she wants to walk - and who she wants to walk it with.
THE YAMASHITA REVUE.
All-female theatre owned and directed by the Yamashita family in Tokyo since the 1950’s. Currently, the oldest son of the family, Yamashita Kei, is head of the theatre board that sees to the administration of the Revue.
The theatre consists of two troupes, Baragumi and Yurigumi, one focused on honing the skill of dancing (Baragumi) and the other on honing the skill of singing (Yurigumi). Yurigumi is especially famous for its full-length plays and musicals, while Baragumi is famed for its elaborate and sparkling revue dance shows. Each troupe has about 50 members, led by the top combi, one otoko yaku (male role actress) and one onna yaku (female role actress), promoted by the board.
To further promote the “couple” image of the top combi, each pair lives together in an assigned apartment with two separate bedrooms, but sharing all other facilities and living together for as long as they’re working as a combi. This is seen as a condition for rising in rank and cannot be arranged any other way. Once they retire from the Revue, they move out of the apartment, whether together or apart.
Daily leadership happens in combination with Yamashita Kei and each troupe’s kumichou (troupe leader), who is the most senior actress of the group, the show’s artistic director and the lead choreographer, both of the latter depending on show.
